Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 657 is a double/single-action revolver chambered in .41 Magnum. Introduced in 1986 as the stainless steel counterpart to the blued Model 57, it was built on Smith & Wesson’s large N-frame with three-screws. The Model 657 features a six-shot fluted cylinder with a nominal length of approximately 1.67 inches and was offered in 4-inch, 6-inch, and 8 3/8-inch barrel lengths with a shrouded extractor rod, making it suitable for both target shooting and field use. Standard features included a .500-inch target hammer and a .400-inch smooth combat trigger. A 1/8-inch serrated ramp front sight pinned to the ramp base, paired with a micrometer-click adjustable rear sight, provides precise sighting and accuracy. Grips varied from wood to rubber throughout production, depending on the production period and configuration. Over its production run, the Model 657 underwent numerous engineering revisions, including changes to the yoke retention system, cylinder stop notch, rear sight and extractor, a drilled and tapped frame, revisions to internal lockwork, the introduction of MIM hammer and trigger components with a floating firing pin, the addition of the internal key lock system, and the adoption of the two-piece barrel design. The Model 657 was produced from 1986 to 2005.
