Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Ruger Old Army is a black-powder percussion revolver introduced in 1972 by Sturm, Ruger & Co. and manufactured through 2008. Offered with 7.5-inch or 5.5-inch barrels, it earned a reputation for strength, reliability, and excellent accuracy within the black-powder community. Produced during a resurgence of interest in traditional muzzleloaders, the Old Army distinguished itself by pairing 19th-century ignition with modern engineering. Unlike most percussion revolvers, it was not patterned after a specific historical cap-and-ball design. Instead, it was derived from Ruger’s Blackhawk, itself inspired by the cartridge-firing Colt Single Action Army, the famed “Peacemaker.” As a result, the Old Army incorporates modern features such as coil springs and an investment-cast frame while retaining traditional loose black-powder loading components. Though built around the Blackhawk’s durable action, it takes subtle styling cues from the Spiller & Burr revolver, particularly the elongated frame ahead of the cylinder to house the loading lever assembly. Early models were marked .44 caliber and later .45, though all versions use .457-inch round balls or .454-inch pure lead conicals. Its exceptionally strong frame allows the safe use of heavier black-powder charges than many replicas, enhancing its appeal among shooters who value both historical character and modern durability.

Unlike the Blackhawk, the Old Army did not use Ruger’s transfer-bar safety. Instead, it relied on safety notches between each chamber—similar to mid-19th-century cap-and-ball revolvers produced by Remington Arms and Colt's Manufacturing Company. This preserves traditional handling while reflecting Ruger’s longstanding emphasis on strength and practical performance. In the end, the Ruger Old Army occupies a distinct niche: neither a strict historical reproduction nor a purely modern design, but a well-executed bridge between eras that combines frontier-style black-powder shooting with Ruger’s hallmark durability.
