Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this RARE double-action revolver today for a penny-start auction; this is the Smith & Wesson 36-1 Two-Tone PINTO Limited Edition!

Produced in a LIMITED RUN OF ONLY 75 UNITS, this edition was manufactured in 1999 and is highly sought after by collectors. Its rarity is further enhanced when accompanied by its original factory box and documentation, all confirming the exclusive product code. As a factory-documented special order, the 36-1 Pinto represents one of the most elusive and collectible configurations within the classic Smith & Wesson revolver lineup.

The Smith & Wesson Model 36-1 with product code 101558 is a remarkably scarce variant of the iconic Chief’s Special, often referred to as the “Pinto” model due to its distinctive two-tone finish. Built on the J-frame with a 3-inch heavy barrel, this revolver uniquely combines a blued frame with a nickel-finished cylinder and barrel, a rare aesthetic departure from standard production.

According to the owner, this example remains in NEW OLD STOCK condition, and we see no evidence to indicate otherwise whatsoever!

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 36 (also known as the Chief's Special) is a revolver chambered for .38 Special. It is one of several models of J-frame revolvers. It was introduced in 1950, and is still in production in the classic blued Model 36 and the stainless steel Model 60. The Model 36 was designed in the era just after World War II, when Smith & Wesson stopped producing war materials and resumed normal production. For the Model 36, they sought to design a revolver that could fire the more powerful (compared to the .38 Long Colt or the .38 S&W) .38 Special round in a small, concealable package. Since the older I-frame was not able to handle this load, a new frame was designed, which became the J-frame.

The Smith & Wesson Model 36-1 with product code 101558, widely recognized as the “Pinto,” stands out as one of the most unique and desirable J-frame revolvers ever produced. Built on the tried-and-true Chief’s Special platform, this variant features a rare factory two-tone finish with a blued frame and contrasting nickel barrel and cylinder. Chambered in .38 Special with a 3-inch heavy barrel, it balances concealability with improved ballistic performance and sight radius over the standard snub-nose configuration. What truly sets the Model 36-1 “Pinto” apart is its extraordinary rarity. According to factory records and collector consensus, only 75 examples were produced under this specific product code, making it one of the scarcest postwar Smith & Wesson revolvers. These limited-production runs were often created as distributor exclusives or test-market models, and few were preserved in high condition with matching boxes and paperwork. For collectors, finding a complete and documented 36-1 Pinto is a significant opportunity. Its scarcity, distinct appearance, and historical placement in the evolution of concealed carry revolvers make it a standout piece in any advanced Smith & Wesson collection.
