Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
In 1965, Jim Sullivan joined Ruger with the task of developing a big-game bolt-action rifle capable of competing with established industry leaders such as Winchester’s Model 70 and Remington’s Model 700. Sullivan, who had previously played a key role in bringing the M16 into production at Armalite, brought significant engineering expertise to the project. The result was the Ruger M77, a rifle that blended Sullivan’s forward-thinking manufacturing concepts with Bill Ruger’s admiration for the Mauser 98. While the M77 incorporated key Mauser characteristics, including twin forward locking lugs and a 90-degree bolt lift, the original 1968 production rifles utilized a push-feed action with a plunger-style ejector and non-rotating claw extractor rather than true controlled-round feed. Ruger’s influence was further evident in features such as the hinged floorplate, flanged left-side bolt sleeve, tang-mounted safety, and the distinctive angled front action screw designed to draw the action securely into the stock. Despite its Mauser inspiration, the M77 was a distinctly modern design, particularly in its construction, as Sullivan championed the use of investment casting for both the receiver and bolt—an unconventional approach at a time when machining from solid bar stock was standard practice. Introduced in 1968, the rifle initially received a modest reception but ultimately became one of the most successful American big-game rifles of its era, with more than one million units sold during its first 21 years of production.

Over time, numerous variants of the M77 kept the platform relevant and appealing to both hunters and shooters. Among these, the Ruger M77 Mark II, introduced in 1991, represented a significant mechanical evolution over the M77, standardizing true controlled-round feed with a full-length claw extractor, fixed blade ejector, and three-position safety, along with improvements to accuracy, durability, and ergonomics. Later, the Ruger M77 Hawkeye refined the platform further with updated trigger systems, stock options, and expanded stainless and synthetic configurations. Through each iteration, the M77 remained faithful to its original design philosophy while incorporating refinements that allowed it to remain competitive in an evolving sporting-rifle market.
