The Browning Hi-Power Mark III SFS is one of the more distinctive late-production variants of the legendary service pistol. Manufactured by FN Herstal, these pistols were imported during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Built on the proven Mark III platform, this full-size, single-action, steel-framed semi-automatic pistol is chambered in .40 S&W and fitted with a 4 5/8" barrel. The pistol is finished in a durable matte blue, equipped with dovetail-mounted front and rear sights that provide a clean, practical sight picture, and black checkered grips offer a secure hold, while maintaining the classic ergonomics of the Hi-Power design. The defining feature of this variant is the innovative Safety Fast Shooting (SFS) system, a modernized, simplified, and more durable version of FN’s earlier Fast Action system. Using a two-piece hammer, the SFS mechanism allows the hammer to be cocked in the normal manner and then safely pressed forward against an internal hammer block, automatically engaging the safety lever. Although the hammer appears down, the pistol remains internally cocked in Condition 1; when the safety is disengaged, the hammer instantly returns to the cocked position, leaving the pistol ready to fire.

FN originally developed the SFS during the early 1980s and submitted it alongside the Browning Hi-Power BDA for the 1984 XM9 Service Pistol Trials; the design was rejected because it did not meet the military’s double-action requirement. FN later refined the system and introduced it commercially on select Hi-Power pistols in the early 1990s. Around 2002–2003, these pistols began appearing at wholesalers in larger quantities. Because of their availability during this period, many owners chose to convert them back to standard Hi-Power configuration using traditional hammer, sear, safety, and slide-release components. As a result, surviving factory SFS examples are less common and encountered less frequently today.
