Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The 2004 Ruger Mark III represents the third-generation evolution of Ruger’s venerable .22-caliber Mark series — a thoughtfully modernized rimfire pistol that kept the Mark line’s single-action, blowback-operated heritage while adding a handful of features aimed at safety, user convenience, and optics compatibility. Chambered in .22 Long Rifle and fed from a detachable 10-round magazine, the Mark III was offered in several configurations (including the traditional “Target” style with a 5½-inch bull barrel and a 22/45-style model built on a 1911-type polymer grip frame), and Ruger drilled and tapped many receivers for Weaver-style scope mounts right from the factory to recognize its role as a dedicated target/training pistol. Mechanically it retained the simple, crisp single-action trigger the Mark series is known for, but added a visible loaded-chamber indicator on the left side, a magazine disconnect safety and an internal keyed safety lock — changes that increased drop-and-storage safety but also drew criticism from some competitive and recreational shooters who preferred the simpler, less-restricted Mark II controls. Another welcome user-focused change was moving the magazine release from a heel-style catch to a paddle/button behind the trigger guard, making reloads faster and more intuitive for contemporary shooters. In practice the Mark III earned praise for its inherent accuracy, light recoil and robust reliability with a wide variety of .22 LR ammunition, and it supported a lively aftermarket of sights, barrels, grips and accessories; at the same time, its added safeties and slightly more complex disassembly compared with later Mark IV designs meant it occupies a specific place in the Mark series’ history as the transitional model introduced in 2004 and produced until the Mark IV replaced it several years later.
