Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Ruger P345 represents the final evolution of Ruger’s long-running P-series of semi-automatic pistols, bringing together years of refinement into a more modern, ergonomically designed .45 ACP sidearm. Introduced in 2004, the P345 was developed to meet the demand for a slimmer, lighter, and more user-friendly .45 caliber pistol compared to earlier P-series designs, which were often criticized for their bulk and blocky profiles. Featuring a polymer frame paired with a stainless steel or blued steel slide, the P345 weighed in at around 29 ounces, making it noticeably lighter and more streamlined than its predecessors. Its grip was specifically engineered to be thinner and more contoured, making it comfortable for shooters with smaller hands while still accommodating Ruger’s traditional double-stack magazine holding eight rounds of .45 ACP. The pistol also offered a DA/SA (double-action/single-action) trigger system with an external hammer and ambidextrous manual safety/decocker, allowing shooters to carry it in a variety of modes depending on preference. Ruger equipped the P345 with three-dot sights for quick target acquisition and a Picatinny accessory rail on later models, enabling attachment of tactical lights or lasers for defensive applications. Beyond ergonomics, the Ruger P345 incorporated several features that reflected Ruger’s emphasis on safety and reliability. It included a loaded chamber indicator and a magazine disconnect safety, preventing the pistol from firing when the magazine was removed. While some shooters disliked these features, they made the P345 attractive to law enforcement agencies and civilian users, prioritizing safe handling. The pistol’s robust design, reinforced with Ruger’s proven investment-cast steel components, ensured durability under heavy use and compatibility with a wide range of .45 ACP loads, from standard ball ammunition to high-pressure defensive hollow points. Despite its forward-thinking design, the P345 was eventually overshadowed by the rise of striker-fired pistols, such as Ruger’s own SR and later American series, which offered simpler manual of arms and competitive features in the same price range. Still, the P345 remains notable as one of Ruger’s best-executed hammer-fired semi-automatics, combining the proven stopping power of the .45 ACP with modern ergonomics and safety innovations. Today, it retains a loyal following among Ruger collectors and shooters who appreciate its balance of power, comfort, and reliability in a traditional DA/SA platform.
