Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Izhmash Saiga-20 is a Russian semi-automatic shotgun developed in the 1990s by the Izhmash factory (now Kalashnikov Concern) as part of the Saiga sporting firearms line, which adapted the legendary AK-series rifle platform for civilian use. Named after the Saiga antelope native to Russia, the Saiga-20 was originally designed for hunting and sport shooting, chambered in 20 gauge and utilizing a gas-operated, long-stroke piston system similar to the AK-47, with a rotating bolt for exceptional reliability. Unlike traditional tube-fed shotguns, it uses detachable box magazines, typically available in 2-, 5-, or 8-round capacities, giving it faster reload capability and a distinct tactical appeal. Barrel lengths generally range from longer sporting configurations to compact “K” models with shorter barrels and folding stocks, and many examples feature chrome-lined barrels and actions, AK-style iron sights, and side rails for optics mounting. Lighter-recoiling than its 12-gauge counterpart yet still rugged and durable, the Saiga-20 earned a loyal following among hunters, sport shooters, and AK enthusiasts, with tactical conversions becoming especially popular. Imports into the United States were eventually halted due to sanctions, which have driven up interest and collector value for original Russian-made Saiga shotguns, making the Saiga-20 a unique blend of Kalashnikov reliability, sporting practicality, and modern modular potential.
