Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Ruger Redhawk is a double-action/single-action (DA/SA) revolver first introduced in 1979 by Sturm, Ruger & Company. It marked Ruger’s entry into the large-bore double-action revolver market and was designed by Roy Melcher and Harry Sefried, both former High Standard Manufacturing Company engineers and co-creators of the High Standard Sentinel revolver. Officially announced in 1979 and released in 1980, the Redhawk debuted in .44 Magnum with either 5.5-inch or 7.5-inch barrels, and was offered in blued or stainless steel finishes. It featured a square-butt grip and fully adjustable sights. While its grip profile and lack of a sideplate echoed the earlier Ruger Security-Six, the Redhawk was an entirely new design, built on a heavier and more robust frame. Specifically engineered to withstand the heaviest .44 Magnum loads, the Redhawk introduced a distinctive triple-locking cylinder system, securing the cylinder at the front, rear, and bottom.

This design—previously only seen in Smith & Wesson’s legendary Triple Lock .44 Hand Ejector—was praised by co-designer Harry Sefried, who remarked it would “last almost indefinitely.” To streamline the mechanism and reduce the number of parts, Ruger incorporated a single coil spring to power both the hammer and the trigger. This innovation simplified maintenance and improved durability, though it resulted in a slightly heavier single-action trigger pull. The Redhawk’s ramp front sight and fully adjustable white-outline rear sight provided excellent target visibility and quick sight acquisition. Models were also available with factory scope mounts and rings, enhancing their appeal to handgun hunters. Depending on the caliber, the Redhawk holds six or eight rounds, with barrel lengths ranging from 4 to 7.5 inches.
While originally chambered only in .44 Magnum, the Redhawk lineup eventually expanded to include .41 Magnum, .357 Magnum, and .45 Colt. The Ruger Redhawk dual-caliber model is chambered to shoot both .45 Colt and .45 ACP using moon clips (not included), was introduced in 2015. Still in production today, the Ruger Redhawk remains a popular choice among revolver enthusiasts, prized for its strength, reliability, and slightly more compact frame compared to the Super Redhawk, particularly for hunting and personal defense applications where optics are not required.
