Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Model No. 3 Schofield .45 LC, 5" revolver was designed by Major George W. Schofield of the 10th Cavalry, who sought to improve upon Smith & Wesson's Model No. 3 "American." Produced by S&W from 1875 to 1877, nearly 8,000 units were ordered by the U.S. Army in the proprietary .45 Schofield cartridge. These revolvers saw extensive use in the Geronimo campaign by the 4th Cavalry, as well as with the buffalo soldiers of the 9th and 10th Cavalry. Schofields were also employed by the James-Younger gang, U.S. Marshal Bill Tilghman, and notable figures like Custer's chief of scouts, "Lonesome Charley" Reynolds. The Schofield's top-break design and rapid ejection system made it a favorite of mounted troops, many of whom considered it superior to the 1873 Colt Single Action.

In the 1880s, New York gun dealer Schuyler, Hartley & Graham bought surplus Schofields, shortened their barrels from 7 to 5 inches, and sold many to Wells Fargo & Company. Cimarron now offers the Model No. 3 Schofield, 2nd Model, faithfully copied from an original in their extensive collection of antique firearms. Available in various barrel lengths and calibers, including 3 1/2 inches in .45 Colt, 5 inches in .38 Special or .45 Colt, and the cavalry-length 7-inch barrel in .38 Special, .44-40, or .45 Colt, these Schofields also handle the .45 Schofield cartridge. Whether you're a fan of the Old West or Western films like Unforgiven or 3:10 to Yuma, a Cimarron Schofield offers a connection to the legendary firearms of that era. Markings on the grips include the inspector's initials, DAL (Lt. David A. Lyle), and sub-inspector CW (Charles Woodman).
