Over time the Python became one of the most iconic .357 Magnum revolvers ever produced, favored by collectors, law enforcement officers, and competition shooters alike. In the late 1990s Colt transitioned Python production away from the standard assembly line and into the Custom Shop, where the revolvers were produced in smaller numbers and marketed as the Python Elite, emphasizing higher levels of fitting and finishing. In its modern or “new generation” form, the Python benefits from updated engineering while retaining the classic aesthetics that made the model famous. Colt redesigned key areas of the revolver when it returned to production in 2020, strengthening the frame and top strap by adding approximately 30% more steel beneath the rear sight and improving durability with stronger modern stainless-steel alloys.
