Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Uberti 1860 Army revolver is a precision-crafted reproduction of one of the most important and iconic percussion revolvers of the American Civil War. Introduced by Colt in 1860 as a replacement for the earlier Dragoon models, the 1860 Army offered a powerful yet refined design that quickly became the standard sidearm for Union forces. Chambered in .44 caliber, it delivered hard-hitting performance in a more compact and better-balanced frame, weighing just under three pounds—significantly lighter than the bulky Dragoons. Its sleek, rounded contours, 8-inch round barrel, and the innovative “creeping” loading lever represented a bold departure from the square-edged forms and hinged levers of Colt’s earlier designs. Between 1860 and 1873, over 200,000 units were produced, with 127,156 purchased by the U.S. government, making it the most widely issued revolver of the Civil War. The military model, identifiable by its 4-screw frame and cutout recoil shield for accepting a shoulder stock, accounted for more than half of total production.

Civilian versions were also produced and widely used during and after the war, particularly on the expanding western frontier. Uberti’s faithful reproduction captures every detail of the original—from the roll-engraved cylinder and richly finished walnut grips to the steel backstrap and the brass trigger guard. Whether configured to mirror a government-issue revolver or a privately purchased sidearm, the Uberti 1860 Army remains a favorite among black powder shooters, collectors, and historical reenactors. Its enduring appeal lies not only in its striking appearance and robust performance but also in its pivotal role in American history.
