The A.A. Arms / Kimel AP-9 is a blowback, semi-automatic 9×19mm pistol manufactured for the U.S. market by A.A. Arms and distributed under the Kimel Industries name. Visually and mechanically it’s very much in the TEC-9 family—large, simple blowback design with a vented barrel shroud and detachable high-capacity magazines—usually built around a ~5" barrel in the full-size configuration and offered with shorter “mini,” longer “target,” and even carbine variants. It was essentially a low-cost, easy-to-produce entrant aimed at buyers who liked the look and perceived firepower of the late-80s/early-90s “assault pistol” style; A.A. Arms began production in the late 1980s and the AP-9 family was most prominent through the early 1990s. The platform was directly affected by the 1994 Federal Assault Weapons Ban: magazine capacities and some cosmetic/configuration options were constrained, and A.A.
