Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this amazing semi-automatic pistol today for a penny-start auction, this is the Anciens Etablissements Pieper (AEP) Bergmann-Bayard Model 1910!
During Germany’s 1914 occupation of Belgium, AEP production fell under German control (serial numbers ranging from approx. 15,000 to 16,000), and collector sources report that occupation-era pistols lacked Belgian proofs and carried alternate markings such as the so-called “apple in a diamond.” This particular example was made under German occupation, which is indicated by the “apple in a diamond” proof mark.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Theodor Bergmann, an industrialist from Gaggenau, Germany, began experimenting with self-loading pistols in the 1890s, working with designer Louis Schmeisser to produce early prototypes such as the 1894, 1896, and 1897 models in various calibers; these featured blowback or early locked-breech designs but achieved only limited commercial or military success. Bergmann’s first major military breakthrough came with the development of the Bergmann Mars, which scaled down a square-block locked-breech system originally designed for Bergmann heavy machine guns, offering greater strength, reliability, and ease of manufacture than previous side-tilting designs, and chambered it for the proprietary 9mm Bergmann cartridge, later known as 9mm Largo in Spain, which fired a 135-grain bullet at roughly 1,060–1,115 fps.

Spain officially recommended the 1903 for military adoption in 1905, placing an order for 3,000 pistols, however Bergmann’s own factory could not meet demand, so he licensed production to the Belgian firm Anciens Etablissements Pieper (AEP), which modified the design into the Model 1908 with a shorter, wider grip, improved magazine release, and revised disconnector, delivering the Spanish contract around 1908–1909, while also producing commercial examples. Denmark later adopted the design as the Model 1910, incorporating contract-specific features such as an S-shaped mainspring, magazine-well cutouts, and a redesigned locking block; approximately 4,840 pistols were delivered and marked with Danish acceptance symbols, and Denmark later produced the Model 1910/21 domestically beginning around 1922.
During Germany’s 1914 occupation of Belgium, AEP production fell under German control (serial numbers ranging from approx. 15,000 to 16,000), and collector sources report that occupation-era pistols lacked Belgian proofs and carried alternate markings such as the so-called “apple in a diamond.” Production effectively ended after World War I, though limited postwar assembly extended the upper serial range to roughly 17,000. The Bergmann series, including the Mars, Model 1903/1908, Model 1910, and Danish Model 1910/21, saw long service, with the 9mm Bergmann/Largo cartridge remaining in Spanish and Danish military use for decades, while commercial versions were sold under the Bayard trademark, some fitted with presentation cases or optional shoulder stocks.
