Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The American Western Arms Peacekeeper is a premium reproduction of the Colt 1873 Single Action Army (often called the “Peacemaker”), produced in a very limited run (approx. 2,000 units) between about 2000 and 2003. Manufactured by American Western Arms (AWA), the parts were primarily made in Italy (notably by Armi San Marco), but the final assembly, fitting, polishing, and finishing were done in the U.S. What sets the Peacekeeper apart is its attention to detail in replicating classic aesthetics and mechanical feel: it features a case-hardened frame, blued steel barrel and cylinder, and black checkered hard grips stamped with the running horse & Great Seal imagery—mirroring the iconic style of early Single Action Army revolvers. Common barrel lengths included 4¾-inch and 7½-inch, and calibers offered spanned traditional western cartridges like .45 Colt, .44-40, .38-40, and even .357 Magnum in some instances. The piece also marked “AMERICAN WESTERN ARMS / PEACEKEEPER / .45 COLT” (or the relevant caliber) on the barrel alongside patent dates on the frame, combining both style and a level of marksmanship authenticity. In practical use, the Peacekeeper enjoys a reputation among cowboy-action shooters, collectors, and Western firearm enthusiasts for its smooth, well-tuned action, good accuracy, and faithful build. Many owners note that the trigger pull and hammer feel are among the better quality clones—they are properly fitted, and the revolver often shoots tighter groups than many less expensive replicas. That said, because so few were made, finding one in excellent condition is challenging; many saw hard field use in Single Action Shooting Society (SASS) or Cowboy Action Shooting (CAS) matches. On the collector side, the Peacekeeper’s limited production, high craftsmanship, strong reviews, and legal history (Colt filed trade-dress litigation against AWA, which contributed to Peacekeeper’s cessation) all add to its desirability. As a result, well-preserved examples command premium prices, especially those with original finish, grips, and intact packaging or cases. It remains a highly respected alternative for those who want classic SAA style, feel, and presence without paying the top price for an original Colt.
