Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Japanese Arisaka Type 38 is a bolt-action infantry rifle introduced in 1905 and widely issued throughout the Imperial Japanese Army during both World Wars. Chambered in the 6.5×50mm Arisaka cartridge, it is known for its exceptional strength, robust construction, and long 31-inch barrel, which contributed to its mild recoil and consistent accuracy. Designed by Colonel Nariakira Arisaka, the Type 38 featured a straight bolt handle, a five-round internal magazine, and a rear sight adjustable out to extreme battlefield distances. Its reputation for durability is such that captured examples were frequently tested by Allied ordnance officers, who found the action among the strongest of any service rifle of the era. Even today, the Type 38 remains highly regarded by collectors for its historical significance, mechanical resilience, and its role as one of Japan’s primary service rifles during a transformative period in military history.

Many Arisaka Type 38 rifles imported after World War II were inexpensive and readily available, leading many owners to sporterize them for hunting or recreational shooting. This process often included shortening or replacing the original military-length barrel, fitting a new stock with a more ergonomic profile, and drilling and tapping the receiver for modern scope mounts. Some rifles were also rechambered or rebarreled to more common Western calibers, taking advantage of the Type 38’s exceptionally strong action.
