Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Thompson submachine gun, famously nicknamed the "Tommy Gun," "Chicago Typewriter," "Chicago Piano," "Trench Sweeper," and "Trench Broom," is a magazine-fed, blowback-operated, air-cooled firearm developed by U.S. Army Brigadier General John T. Thompson in 1918. Originally conceived to break the deadlock of trench warfare during World War I, it wasn't completed until after the war ended. In its early years, the Thompson was sold to civilians, which contributed to its infamous reputation during the Prohibition era. With its rapid rate of fire and ease of access, it became the weapon of choice for both law enforcement officers and organized crime syndicates, making frequent appearances in newsreels and headlines throughout the 1920s and 1930s. During World War II, the Thompson was officially adopted by the U.S. military and widely used by Allied forces, with primary wartime variants including the M1928A1, M1, and M1A1. Over 1.5 million units were produced during the conflict. Today, the Thompson remains a coveted collector’s item and is still popular among shooting enthusiasts. One modern version, the Thompson 1927A-1, is chambered in .45 ACP and features a pinned Cutts compensator, extending the barrel to 18 inches, with an overall length of 41 inches. It comes with either a blued steel receiver (T1 models) or a lightweight aluminum receiver (T5 models), and sports a blade front sight and an adjustable rear sight. The gun’s furniture includes a fixed, polished American Walnut stock and a distinctive vertical foregrip. The T1-14 model, with its 16.5-inch barrel, is slightly shorter than the standard T1. Notably, the BATFE recognizes the permanently affixed Cutts compensator on the 16.5-inch version as part of the barrel, whereas the pinned compensator on 18-inch models is not.
