Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Thompson submachine gun—often referred to by its many nicknames such as the "Tommy Gun," "Chicago Typewriter," "Chicago Piano," "Trench Sweeper," and "Trench Broom"—is a blowback-operated, air-cooled, magazine-fed selective-fire firearm. Invented in 1918 by U.S. Army Brigadier General John T. Thompson, it was initially designed to break the deadlock of trench warfare in World War I. However, it wasn't completed until after the war had ended. The Thompson was later sold to the public, and its availability quickly earned it notoriety during the Prohibition era, where it became the weapon of choice for organized crime syndicates in the 1920s. Its striking presence in the media made it synonymous with both criminals and law enforcement alike.

During World War II, the Thompson was widely adopted by U.S. forces and extensively used by Allied troops. The most common models of the weapon during the war were the M1928A1, M1, and M1A1. By the time the war ended, over 1.5 million Thompson submachine guns had been produced, cementing its place in military and criminal history alike.
