Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Belgian Richards trade-name side-lever break-action double-barrel shotguns are late 19th- to early 20th-century sporting arms produced in Liège, Belgium by Henri Pieper and various Belgian manufacturers, all of whom supplied guns under English-sounding trade names for the export market. Names such as W. Richards, M. Richards, W. & H. Richards, Richards, and A. Richard was applied to Belgian guns imported by distributors and were selected in part to evoke the prestige of Westley Richards of England, although these guns are not products of the English firm. Manufactured in Liège and bearing Belgian proof marks, they typically feature side-by-side barrels, external hammers, side levers, and different steel barrels, reflecting the standard designs of the period. Designed to provide the appearance and handling of English-style sporting shotguns at more affordable prices, they were widely sold in both the American and British export markets. Today, they are recognized as representative examples of Belgium’s prolific export gun trade rather than genuine Westley Richards products.
