Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Beretta 950 series marked the Italian gunmaker's entry into the ultra-compact, small-caliber pocket pistol market during the mid-20th century. Introduced in 1952, the original Italian-made Model 950B was a .25 ACP semi-automatic pistol imported into the United States until 1968, when the Gun Control Act imposed stricter import standards, including the requirement for a manual safety. In response, Beretta introduced the Model 950BS, which incorporated a thumb safety to comply with U.S. law—the "BS" designation standing for "Brevettato Sicurezza," or "patented safety" in Italian—allowing continued U.S. importation after 1968. While the early models were Italian-made, Beretta later established U.S. production for some 950 variants to better serve the American market.

Beretta also produced several notable variants, including the 950BS "Jetfire," the .25 ACP model commonly marketed in the U.S.; the 950BS "Minx," a .22 Short version with a longer barrel; the 950BS Inox, featuring stainless steel construction for enhanced durability; and the 950BS EL (Extra Luxury), which offered gold-plated small parts and wood grips for collectors. Any 950B pistols without a manual safety were imported before 1968, while those with the added safety, later variants, and U.S.-produced models were introduced afterward to meet new legal requirements and evolving market demands.
