Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Argentine firearms manufacturer Bersa S.A. designed the Model 97 in the mid-1970s as part of the company’s early line of compact pistols intended for civilian self-defense and police backup use. Mechanically, it was a simple blowback-operated, single-action pistol chambered in .380 ACP, featuring a 3 1/2-inch barrel, a steel frame, and a single-stack magazine. Externally, it bore many similarities to the earlier .22 Long Rifle Model 644 from which it was derived, but it was scaled up to handle the more powerful .380 ACP cartridge. Standard features included an exposed loop hammer, a manual safety on the left side of the frame, a safety on the slide, a magazine release mounted in the left grip panel, and a fixed front sight, along with an adjustable rear sight, which was somewhat uncommon for pistols of its compact class. Like other Bersa pistols of the period, its slide was typically blue steel with markings such as “Bersa S.A. Ramos Mejía Argentina” along with a serial number, and the grips were usually made of checkered black plastic.

Production of the Model 97 continued until it was discontinued in the mid-late 1980s, making way for later, more refined Bersa pistols such as the popular Thunder series. Though relatively uncommon today, the Model 97 occupies an important place in Bersa’s history as one of the company’s first compact .380 ACP offerings, appreciated by collectors for its simplicity, concealability, and as a representative of Argentina’s growing firearms industry during the late 20th century.
