*SOLD* 1894 Springfield Armory M1892 .30-40 Blue *COVETED LOW FOUR DIGIT SERIAL*
Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Springfield Model 1892-99 is a series of bolt-action rifles designed by Norwegians known as Krag-Jørgensen rifles. The United States Army adopted these rifles in 1892 as their standard military longarms. Chambered for the U.S. caliber .30-40 Krag cartridges. The Springfield Armory manufactured all versions and variants under license between 1892 and 1903. These rifles gained fame due to their use in the Spanish-American War. Despite its popularity, uniqueness, and efficiency, the side-loading gate mechanism of the Krag was slow and cumbersome to reload during combat compared to the clip-loaded Spanish Mausers. As a result, the U.S. Krag was replaced starting in 1903 with the Springfield rifle M1903, which was essentially a copy of the Mauser. However, some design elements of the Krag, such as the cocking piece, were still retained. The American Krags are the most abundant and affordable of all Krag variants, although many have been sporterized. To this day, firearm collectors remain fond of them.
The M1892 Krag rifles featured a magazine cut-off that operated in the up position and were identifiable by the single-piece cleaning rod stored under the barrel. Interestingly, due to a two-year retooling period for production, many M1892 Krags have receivers marked with an 1894 date. Most of these rifles were later refurbished at the arsenal to the M1896 configuration. This particular example is one such reconditioned rifle, which involved several upgrades: the magazine cut-off was replaced with a new one that operated in the down position, and a three-piece cleaning rod (Not Inculded) was added, stored in a butt trap. The front cleaning rod was removed, and the groove in the stock was filled with a wood plug. Additional improvements included a redesigned rear sight, tighter production tolerances for enhanced accuracy, and a slightly altered stock, which was made thicker for better durability.
