*SOLD* 1901 Colt Single Action Army .38 WCF 5.5" *VINTAGE 1st GENERATION MODEL*
Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Single Action Army (SAA), also known by several other names such as the Peacemaker, Model P, and M1873, is one of the most iconic revolvers in history. Designed by Colt’s Patent Firearms Manufacturing Company for the U.S. government’s service revolver trials in 1872, it was adopted as the standard-issue revolver of the U.S. Army from 1873 to 1892. The revolver was initially chambered in .45 Colt, which became the most famous and enduring of its many caliber variations. Its design has influenced generations of firearms, becoming a symbol of the American Wild West era. The Colt SAA’s rugged design, simplicity, and reliability contributed to its widespread adoption by U.S. military forces and its eventual use by civilians, particularly lawmen, ranchers, and outlaws. Over time, the SAA came to be known as the "Peacemaker," underscoring its reputation as a reliable sidearm in times of law and order as well as lawlessness.
The Colt SAA has been manufactured in over 30 different calibers, with the most notable being the .45 Colt, .44-40 Winchester, .38-40 Winchester, and .32-20 Winchester. The revolver has always retained its distinctive single-action mechanism, and while its overall appearance has remained relatively consistent since its introduction, several key variations have emerged. These included different barrel lengths such as the original 7.5-inch barrel issued to the U.S. Cavalry, as well as shorter barrels that became known as the "Civilian" and "Gunfighter" models (4.75-inch), and the "Artillery" model (5.5-inch). In the early 20th century, models with shorter barrels, such as the "Sheriff's Model," became popular among those seeking a more compact revolver for personal defense. Furthermore, the SAA saw numerous upgrades over the years, including the introduction of the spring-loaded base pin latch in 1896, which replaced the cylinder pin retaining screw, and the adaptation to smokeless powder in 1900, significantly improving performance and durability.
The Colt SAA went through several stages of production, with the "Pre-War" or "First Generation" models, produced from 1873 to 1940, being the most revered among collectors. These revolvers were crafted with high attention to detail and are often prized for their craftsmanship, historical significance, and their role in American history. Production numbers reached 357,859 by the time Colt ceased mass production in the early stages of World War II. Many models from the "First Generation" are highly sought after, with calibers ranging from the iconic .45 Colt to the lesser-known .476 Eley. Today, the Colt SAA is considered one of the most iconic firearms in the world, with its timeless design and historical significance making it a favorite among collectors, reenactors, and firearms enthusiasts. The revolver’s legacy endures, cementing its place as a symbol of the American frontier and an enduring piece of Americana.
