*SOLD* 1919 Savage Arms Model 1907 .32 ACP *EXCELLENT LATE PRODUCTION EXAMPLE*
Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Savage Model 1907 Automatic Pistol emerged as a noteworthy competitor in the burgeoning pocket-pistol market of the early 20th century, a segment popularized by Colt's successful Model 1903. Released in 1907, the Savage Model 1907 was born from the desire to capitalize on the rising demand for compact, semi-automatic pistols, particularly those chambered in the .32 ACP cartridge. While Colt’s Model 1903 offered a sleek and reliable design, Savage sought to differentiate its pistol by introducing a number of innovative features. Most notably, the Model 1907 was the first to use a staggered-column, 10-round magazine, a design that would later influence many future firearms. This magazine, while increasing the grip’s width, provided a significant advantage in terms of ammunition capacity compared to competitors, which typically offered 7- or 8-round single-stack magazines. Additionally, the inclusion of the Searle breech system allowed the Model 1907 to utilize a lightweight slide, contributing to an overall unloaded weight of just 19 ounces—making it lighter than both the FN Model 1900 and the Colt Model 1903. These features made the Model 1907 an appealing choice for those seeking a compact, high-capacity pistol.
The Model 1907 quickly became one of the best-selling pocket pistols in the U.S. market between 1908 and the onset of World War I, despite its higher price point. Its innovative design, lightweight, and reliable operation helped it carve out a strong presence in an increasingly competitive field. Production continued until 1920, when it was discontinued in favor of the newer Model 1917. The latter, while retaining much of the design philosophy of the 1907, introduced a flared grip frame and screws to hold the grip panels in place, offering a more robust design for modern consumers. In total, approximately 235,000 Model 1907 pistols were produced, making it one of Savage’s most significant firearms in terms of sales. While production of Savage pistols ceased in 1928, the Model 1907’s legacy lived on, with its contributions to magazine design influencing later developments in semi-automatic pistols, including the famous Browning Hi-Power.
