*SOLD* 1941 Remington 81 Woodsmaster .35 Rem Blue 22" *CLASSIC AUTOLOADING RIFLE*
Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Remington Model 81 Woodsmaster is a significant milestone in the history of firearms, being a direct descendant of the first successful semi-automatic rifle, the Remington Model 8, which was introduced in 1905. Designed by the legendary John Browning in collaboration with FN, the Model 8 was a breakthrough in semi-automatic rifle technology, though it wasn’t an overwhelming commercial success due to its relatively high cost. However, it laid the foundation for the Model 81, which saw production from 1936 until 1950. The Model 81 Woodsmaster introduced a few key updates to the original Model 8 design, most notably in its appearance. The stock was modified with a pistol grip, while the forearm was made larger, providing a more modern look and improving the handling of the rifle. While the changes were primarily cosmetic, they helped cement the Woodsmaster’s place as a popular rifle in the American market, particularly for hunters. The long recoil operating system, pioneered by John Browning, is a defining feature of the Model 81 Woodsmaster, and it's a design that shares similarities with the Browning Auto-5 shotgun. In this system, the barrel and bolt recoil together a short distance before being returned to their original positions by two distinct springs. The first spring returns the barrel, allowing the rifle to extract and eject the spent case while chambering a new round. The second spring drives the bolt back into position for the next shot. This mechanism is simple, effective, and remarkably durable, contributing to the rifle’s reputation for reliability. Another notable feature of the Model 81 is its take-down design, which allows the barrel to be easily removed from the receiver with the unscrewing of a single bolt—ideal for transport and maintenance. With its blend of innovative design, reliable operation, and user-friendly features, the Model 81 Woodsmaster stands as a testament to early semi-automatic rifle development and remains an iconic piece of American firearm history.
