*SOLD* 1960 Colt Cobra .22 LR *SCARCE 3" BARREL VARIANT* -High Condition Example-
Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Cobra "D" Frame revolver holds a unique place in firearms history as Colt's second venture into aluminum alloy construction, following the introduction of the Colt Commander. Debuting in 1950, the Cobra was essentially an aluminum-framed version of the popular Detective Special, built with Colt’s proprietary "Coltalloy." This innovation significantly reduced weight, making the Cobra an ideal choice for plainclothes officers and concealed carry users who needed a lightweight yet reliable sidearm. It marked a pivotal moment for Colt, as the Cobra became the first in their legendary line of snake-named revolvers. Despite its modern materials, the revolver maintained traditional craftsmanship with steel barrels and internal parts, offering a balance of durability and reduced carry weight.
The Colt Cobra saw production from 1950 through 1981 and was offered in several calibers including .38 Special, .22LR, .32 New Police, and .38 New Police. Barrel lengths ranged from 2 to 4 inches, with a rare 5-inch version made for Venezuela. Throughout its production, the Cobra evolved with several grip changes—from early “Coltwood” plastic to later checkered walnut and eventually combat-style grips. Frame geometry also shifted from square to round butts, and in 1966, the grip frame was shortened to match the Colt Agent, simplifying manufacturing. The option of a factory hammer shroud and multiple finish choices, including blue, anodized, nickel, and even dull black strike-era models, makes the Cobra a diverse and collectible piece of Colt history. Its combination of innovation, practical design, and stylistic evolution secures its status as a classic among mid-20th-century American revolvers.
