*SOLD* 1964 Colt Detective Special 38spl 3" *BREATHTAKING MASTER ENGRAVED* Amazing
Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Detective Special, first introduced in 1927, quickly became an iconic revolver known for its compact design, reliable performance, and strong association with law enforcement. It was developed as a variant of the Colt Police Positive Special, which had been one of Colt's most successful revolver designs. The Detective Special featured a 2-inch barrel and was specifically aimed at police detectives and undercover officers, providing them with a small but powerful weapon that could be easily concealed. Over the next five decades, the Detective Special became synonymous with law enforcement, with many officers considering it as much a symbol of their authority as their badge. Its status as the "cop gun" was so firmly established that it was often carried openly as a sign of identification. For both police and civilian concealed carry, it became the gold standard in small, defensive revolvers, admired for its six-shot capacity, accuracy, and impeccable craftsmanship.
The Detective Special underwent a number of changes during its long production run, which collectors categorize as distinct "issues." The first issue revolvers, produced from 1927 to 1946, were initially offered with a square butt, which was later changed to a round butt in 1933. The second issue, which spanned from 1947 to 1965, saw several design modifications aimed at improving the revolver’s functionality. Notable updates included a new cylinder retention system, a ramped front sight with a serrated rear face, and a wider front sight pedestal to enhance accuracy. The grip and finish also evolved, with the introduction of "Coltwood" grips in the late 1940s, followed by the return to checkered walnut with silver medallions. Other changes included a grooved hammer spur, a lengthened ejector rod, and a widened rear sight groove to match the new front sight. These changes, while subtle, helped to refine the Detective Special, making it even more reliable and practical for both law enforcement and civilian use. Throughout its production, the Colt Detective Special maintained its reputation as one of the finest "snubby" revolvers ever made, earning it a lasting place in firearm history.
