*SOLD* 1977 Ruger Old Army .44Cal 7.5" *BEAUTIFUL & DESIRABLE PERCUSSION REVOLVER*
Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Ruger Old Army is a robust and uniquely modern take on the traditional black powder revolver, blending 19th-century percussion firearm technology with 20th-century engineering. Introduced by Sturm, Ruger in 1972 and produced until 2008, the Old Army stands apart from most cap and ball revolvers in that it is not a reproduction of a historical firearm. Instead, it is built on the proven Ruger Blackhawk frame—a design originally derived from the Colt Peacemaker—but adapted to suit black powder loading. The result is a cap and ball revolver with exceptional strength, durability, and reliability, capable of withstanding higher pressures than many of its period-accurate counterparts. The stainless finish enhances corrosion resistance and ease of maintenance, making it ideal for both collectors and black powder shooting enthusiasts.
This particular model features a 7½-inch barrel for improved velocity and accuracy, paired with a pinned ramp front sight and adjustable rear sight for precise target acquisition—a rarity in black powder revolvers, which typically rely on fixed sights. Chambered in .44 caliber, the Old Army is designed to shoot .457" round balls or .454" conical lead bullets, offering impressive power and performance for a muzzleloader. The smooth walnut grips, adorned with Ruger medallions, provide a comfortable hold and classic styling that pays subtle homage to traditional cap and ball designs. Though it forgoes the transfer bar safety found in Ruger’s cartridge-firing revolvers, it incorporates safety notches between the chambers, a feature inspired by mid-19th-century percussion revolvers. Altogether, the Ruger Old Army is a standout in the world of black powder firearms—blending historical charm with Ruger’s hallmark modern innovation.
