*SOLD* AMT Automag II .22 WMR Stainless *SCARCE COMPACT 3 3/8" BARREL MODEL*
Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The AMT Automag II is a striking and unconventional semi-automatic handgun chambered in the high-velocity .22 WMR. First introduced by Arcadia Machine and Tool in 1987 and later revived by High Standard, the Automag II stands out as one of the most innovative rimfire pistols ever built. Creating a self-loading handgun for the .22 WMR wasn't easy—this cartridge uses a slow-burning rifle powder that peaks in pressure later than typical pistol rounds. That delay can cause the case mouth to expand and stick in the chamber during extraction, a problem that stumped many designers. AMT’s solution was pure ingenuity: they drilled 18 tiny vent holes at 90 degrees to the chamber and welded a sleeve over them. This clever system bleeds off excess gas in two stages, reducing pressure just enough to ensure smooth, reliable cycling. It’s a rare and brilliant workaround that shows just how ahead of its time the Automag II really was.
The pistol was offered in several configurations, including a long-barreled 6-inch version favored by target shooters and velocity enthusiasts. A slightly shorter 4.5-inch model provided a balanced option, offering excellent handling and ballistic performance without the extra length of the 6-inch barrel, making it a versatile choice for general-purpose shooting. But it’s the ultra-rare compact 3 3/8-inch barrel model that really gets collectors excited. Produced in limited numbers, this version combines sleek portability with serious firepower, and its scarcity has only added to its allure over time. Visually and mechanically, the gun is equally bold.
The stainless steel slide on the 6-inch barrel model features a distinctive open-top cutout—reminiscent of the Beretta M9—which improves cooling and ensures flawless ejection of spent casings. More importantly, the cutout reduces slide mass, making blowback operation viable for the hot .22 Magnum round. And with its all-stainless steel construction, the Automag II shrugs off rust and corrosion while maintaining a futuristic, rugged aesthetic. Whether you're drawn to it for its technical brilliance, unique styling, or collectible status, the AMT Automag II is a standout piece of firearms history.
