*SOLD* Colt Diamondback .22 LR Nickel 6" *RARE & SOUGHT AFTER - ONLY 2,200 MADE*
Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Diamondback revolver, introduced in 1966, was designed to be a premium, small-frame revolver resembling the highly regarded Colt Python but scaled down. Built on Colt's "D" frame, which was also used for models like the Detective Special, the Diamondback was equipped with high-quality features such as a long, grooved target hammer, target-style walnut grips, and the Colt Accro adjustable sight. Its barrel, inspired by the Python, was produced on the same machinery used for the Python’s barrels. While the Diamondback shared many aesthetic qualities with the Python, it was not fitted or finished to the same level, and its action was not as finely tuned as the Python's. Despite this, the Diamondback offered excellent accuracy and a smooth shooting experience, making it an attractive option for those looking for a premium revolver at a more affordable price.
Produced until 1991, the Diamondback was available in calibers .22LR and .38 Special, with barrel lengths of 2 1/2, 4, and 6 inches. Colt also offered the Diamondback in various finishes, including bright blue, bright nickel, and later satin Electroless nickel (Coltguard). Among the rarest versions were the bright nickel .22LR Diamondbacks, especially those with 2 1/2-inch or 6-inch barrels. Only 2,200 6-inch nickel .22s were made. There is some controversy regarding the .22 Magnum versions, as only a few prototype guns may have been mistakenly assembled with .22 Magnum-marked barrels, although Colt’s official records deny that any .22 Magnum Diamondbacks were ever produced. The 2 1/2 inch version featured service-style grips, while the longer barrels came with target grips. The Diamondback remains a sought-after collectible for revolver enthusiasts due to its unique blend of design, quality, and rarity.
