*SOLD* Dan Wesson 744-VH .44 Mag SS 7.5" *AMAZING INTERCHANGEABLE BARREL MODEL*
Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Dan Wesson double-action revolver design, created by Karl R. Lewis, was a revolutionary advancement in firearm technology. Lewis, who had a history of innovative designs for various firearms, had previously developed an interchangeable barrel system for revolvers. This system was incorporated into the Dan Wesson prototype, marking a significant departure from traditional revolver construction. Unlike most revolvers, where the barrel is tightly screwed into the frame and requires a skilled gunsmith to remove and replace it, Lewis' design featured a barrel housed within a separate shroud that was secured by a nut at the muzzle. This setup placed tension on the barrel and supported it at both ends, allowing for easy swapping of barrels of various lengths and configurations.
This design not only simplified barrel changes but also significantly improved accuracy, as the barrel was held under tension at both ends, allowing the barrel-cylinder gap to be finely adjusted.? In the 1980s, after years of development, Dan Wesson introduced the Model 44, a large-frame revolver explicitly designed for hunters and competitive shooters. Chambered in .44 Magnum/Special, the Model 44 was intended for heavy-duty use with full-power magnum loads and featured a stronger frame than the Smith & Wesson Model 29. The revolver's solid frame, which lacked a separate side plate, contributed to its overall strength and durability. It was offered with different interchangeable barrel lengths ranging from 2 1/2 inches to 10 inches, with the 6-inch version being the most common.
Additionally, the Model 44 allowed for a variety of different shroud configurations, including partial lug, full lug with solid ribs, or ventilated ribs, making it a versatile option for shooters seeking precision and customization. A stainless steel version of the Model 44, designated the Model 744, was also introduced and quickly gained popularity for its corrosion resistance and rugged aesthetics, further solidifying Dan Wesson’s reputation for precision, strength, and innovation.
