*SOLD* Emerson & Silver M-1840 Army NCO's Sword *U.S. CIVIL WAR ISSUE MODEL*

Bryant Ridge's Analysis

This is an excellent example of a U.S. Civil War issue Model 1840 Non-Commissioned Officer's sword, manufactured by Emerson & Silver of Trenton NJ. The sword measures 34" overall, and has an all-brass hilt, with a "double scallop" cross guard, and a "D" hand guard enclosing the knurled hand grip. Comes complete in its straight brass-mounted steel scabbard with intact frog hook. Many makers made these with Leather Scabbards, but Emerson and Silver specifically made them with brass-fitted steel. The 28-inch straight blade's ricasso is marked on one side with the Emerson & Silver company marking - EMERSON & SILVER TRENTON N.J. One the other side it is marked- U.S. D.F.M. 1862. There is an additional D.F.M. on the hand guard, directly in the middle, as well as on the scabbard drag, which corresponds to the Union inspector's initials. Dexter F. Mosman inspected swords at Emerson & Silver from 1862 to 1865.
