*SOLD* J.C. Higgins / Sears Roebuck Model 20 12Ga Blue *AWESOME POWER-PAC CHOKE*
Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Model 20 pump-action shotgun stands as a prime example of American craftsmanship and innovation in the post-war era. Released in the 1940s and available in 12, 16, and 20 gauges, it was produced until the early 1960s, when Sears phased out the J.C. Higgins sporting goods line and replaced it with the Ted Williams brand in 1962. The Model 20 came in various configurations, offering different barrel lengths, at least one muzzle device option (the Power-Pak), and the three gauges, all with 2 3/4” chambers. These shotguns are known for their finely machined receivers, proof-tested barrels, durable walnut stocks, and elegant blue finishes. Some higher-end variants featured aluminum nameplates on the toe of the stock, as well as jeweled bolts and cartridge lifters. Functionally and aesthetically, the Model 20 is essentially identical to the High Standard Model 200 and its later models. Though it shares similarities with the Mossberg 500 series of shotguns, its design predates the 500 series, which was introduced in 1960. Its operation is more akin to that of the Remington Model 31, though all three shotguns have notable similarities.
When it first debuted, the Model 20 stood out from contemporaries like the Winchester Model 12, Remington Models 10, 17, 29, and 870 (introduced in 1949), and the Ithaca Model 37 due to its unique "retracted" lift gate. This mechanism, which rests against the bottom of the bolt and drops to lift the new cartridge when the action is cycled, along with its fixed barrel and lack of a “breakdown” feature for easier transport, made it distinct from its peers.
