*SOLD* Smith Wesson 27-2 .357 Mag *SOUGHT-AFTER NICKEL FINISH with 8 3/8" BARREL*
Bryant Ridge's analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 27, initially introduced as the Registered Magnum in 1935, holds a significant place in the history of revolvers, particularly within the .357 Magnum category. Featuring a large N-frame, carbon steel construction, and a robust six-shot cylinder, it was designed to handle the powerful .357 Magnum cartridge, which was a revolutionary advancement in its time. The Registered Magnum was a custom-order revolver, allowing for a variety of barrel lengths (from 3½ to 8¾ inches), grips, and finishes, which gave it an air of exclusivity and craftsmanship. Despite being launched during the Great Depression, its performance and precision garnered high demand, with Smith & Wesson facing backlogs of orders for four years. The Kansas City Police Department and many law enforcement agencies also adopted the revolver, attesting to its reliability and effectiveness as a service weapon.
In 1939, the Registered Magnum was discontinued, and the Model 27 was introduced as a more standardized, mass-produced version. While the Model 27 was essentially the same revolver with slight modifications for ease of production—such as fewer available customization options—it retained the core features that made the Registered Magnum so esteemed. The Model 27's introduction also marked the evolution of Smith & Wesson's approach to meeting law enforcement and civilian demand, offering the same high-quality firearm in a more affordable package. Available in popular barrel lengths such as 3½", 5", 6½", and 8¾", the Model 27 became an iconic firearm, celebrated for its precision, power, and durability, and remains in production today, cementing its place as one of the most important revolvers in the history of handgun design.
