Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Breda M1D Garand is a scarce Italian military conversion of the classic M1 Garand rifle, reconfigured for enhanced precision and chambered in 7.62 NATO. Built by Breda with collaboration from Meccanica Romana during the Cold War period, these rifles were adapted for designated marksman and sniper use, though this particular example does not include the original optical sight. It features a 23-inch parkerized barrel, classic gas-operated semi-automatic action, and a smooth hardwood stock with a Monte Carlo-style comb designed to better align the shooter’s eye with optics—reflecting its intended precision role. The parkerized finish provides durability and corrosion resistance, making the rifle well-suited for field conditions. Original iron sights remain intact, including a protected winged front blade and a fully adjustable aperture-style rear sight, offering reliable sighting even in the absence of the scope.

While many examples of the “Con Cannocchiale” model were issued with an M84-style scope (designated Cannocchiale Mod. 84), this rifle maintains all of the structural provisions for mounting optics, such as the side-mounted scope block. Markings include “Italy PW Arms INC. Redmond, WA” on the left side of the barrel—indicating U.S. importation—and “7.62mm/2 - SA 2 53 A188A” stamped on the right side of the receiver, confirming its arsenal conversion from .30-06 to 7.62 NATO. Though it no longer retains its original optic, this rifle still represents a significant piece of Cold War-era firearms history, blending the rugged reliability of the M1 Garand with postwar Italian enhancements. With fewer than 300 imported into the United States, examples like this remain highly collectible and offer enthusiasts a rare opportunity to own a distinctive variation of one of the most influential military rifles of the 20th century.
