Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Browning BDM (Browning Dual/Double Mode) is a U.S.-designed, full-size 9mm semi-automatic service pistol produced from 1991 to 1998 by Browning Arms Company. Conceived as a clean-sheet design to compete in law-enforcement service trials, including proposals to the FBI, the BDM ultimately entered the civilian market after failing to secure major agency contracts. Its signature feature is a slide-mounted selector that allows the operator to switch between conventional double-action/single-action (DA/SA) operation and a revolver-style double-action-only (DAO) mode, while simplified BRM-DAO and BPM-D variants were offered in fixed single-mode configurations. Mechanically, it is a locked-breech, short-recoil, hammer-fired design with a nominal 4.7-inch barrel and was typically supplied with double-stack magazines (15-round magazines and reduced 10-round magazines to comply with the 1994 U.S. Federal Assault Weapons Ban).

Browning built the BDM in Morgan, Utah (slides are marked accordingly), and the pistol is noted for its slim, narrow grip, along with a black wrap-around grip with texturing and ambidextrous frame-mounted safety/decocker controls—attributes reviewers praised even as the unconventional control layout and dual-mode concept limited broad institutional adoption. Today, the BDM is regarded as a distinctive, thoughtfully engineered but commercially niche product of 1990s service-pistol development and is sought after by collectors and enthusiasts.
