Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this incredible semi-automatic pistol today for a penny-start auction, this is the Browning / FN Medalist!

On rare occasions when FN ran short of Medalist (“T” serial number) frames, they built complete Medalists using Challenger frames instead. These pistols were marked with a “U” in the serial number, followed by an “S” suffix to indicate the factory modification. Despite the frame substitution, these conversions retained all Medalist features—most notably the dry-fire mechanism—and are considered legitimate factory variants by collectors.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Sure, most enthusiasts know Browning’s modern Buck Mark series—but fewer are familiar with the company’s trio of classic repeating pistols: the Nomad, Challenger, and Medalist. Among these, the Medalist stands out as both the most desirable and, in its day, the most expensive. Produced from 1962 to 1974, the Medalist’s higher price tag often meant its owners took exceptional care of it, resulting in a greater number of surviving examples in excellent condition compared to the Nomad. Distinguished by a “T” in its serial number, the Medalist featured a 6.75-inch barrel and a robust steel frame adorned with walnut grips in a variety of configurations. These grips were works of art in their own right—crisp hand checkering, rich hardwood, and a fit and finish that eclipsed many competitors. Premium variants boasted a ventilated-rib barrel, a forend-style extension, and bold target-style grips.

Deep bluing across the metalwork contrasted beautifully with a gold-plated trigger—an elegant flourish that still graces many Browning firearms today. Mechanically, the Medalist combined refined target-shooting features with practical function, including a positive manual safety, a dry-fire mechanism integrated into the thumb safety, an adjustable trigger, and under-barrel counterweights for balance.

Like the Challenger, the Medalist also saw special editions, such as the sought-after International Medalist and the ultra-rare Gold Line Medalist—believed to number just over 400 units—alongside the Renaissance Medalist, distinguished by its chrome-plated satin finish and meticulous hand fitting. Regardless of variant, the Medalist remains a masterpiece of design—equal parts performance tool and artistic statement. For collectors, locating one in its original hard case with all accessories is a genuine prize. And for those fortunate enough to already own one, the Browning Medalist stands as one of the most striking and capable rimfire semi-automatics ever built.
