Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Browning Lightweight Double Automatic is one of the more unique and innovative shotguns to emerge from Browning’s lineup during the mid-20th century. Introduced in 1955 and designed by Val Browning, son of legendary firearms designer John Moses Browning, the Double Automatic was intended to bridge the gap between the traditional semi-automatic and double-barreled shotgun. Its most distinctive feature was the twin-shell feeding system, which allowed the shotgun to hold two shells at once—one in the chamber and one in the loading port—making it faster and simpler to operate than traditional tube-fed semi-autos. The shooter could also quickly swap out loads depending on the situation, a practical advantage in the field. Built with lightweight aluminum receivers and offered in a wide range of striking anodized finishes, the “Twelvette” variant showcased colors such as Forest Green, Autumn Brown, Royal Blue, and even Silver, giving sportsmen an opportunity to own a shotgun that was as stylish as it was functional. The Lightweight Double Automatic earned particular acclaim for its handling qualities. Its reduced weight and streamlined design made it exceptionally well-balanced, with a smooth, natural swing perfect for upland game and extended field use. Production spanned from 1955 until the early 1970s, with an estimated 67,000 made in total—roughly 45,000 of the steel-receiver “Standard” models and around 22,000 of the alloy-receiver “Twelvette” versions. The latter are especially prized by collectors today, not only for their light handling and distinctive anodized finishes but also for their relative scarcity compared to the steel models. Though never as commercially dominant as Browning’s Auto-5, the Lightweight Double Automatic remains a highly desirable piece among enthusiasts, appreciated both for its place in the evolution of the sporting shotgun and for its rarity, elegance, and innovative design.
