Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The C.G. Haenel Modell I Schmeisser is an innovative early semi-automatic pocket pistol developed in Germany in the aftermath of World War I, representing a collaboration between the historic Haenel firm of Suhl and the influential Schmeisser brothers, Hans and Hugo. C.G. Haenel, founded in 1840 by Carl Gottlieb Haenel, had grown into a major arms manufacturer by the late 19th century. By approximately 1919, Hans and Hugo Schmeisser—already renowned for their work with Bergmann and for Hugo’s role in developing the MP18 submachine gun—were working with Haenel and filing patents under the name Gebrüder Schmeißer. The pistol, originally marketed simply as the “Schmeisserpistole,” entered production around 1919–1920 and was later designated the Modell I only after the introduction of the Modell II in 1926. Production of the Modell I continued into the mid-1920s, typically offered in blued or nickel finishes and marked for both domestic and export markets.

Technically, the Modell I Schmeisser is notable for its unconventional design and advanced safety concepts. It uses a fixed barrel retained by a locking pin integrated into the recoil spring guide rod, with an open-top breech block rather than a conventional slide—an evolution of earlier Dreyse pocket pistol concepts developed by the Schmeissers’ father, Louis Schmeisser. Most significant is its patented magazine safety system, which went through several refinements between 1919 and 1921 and ultimately prevented the magazine from being removed or inserted unless the manual safety was engaged. In its final form, the safety also prevented firing with the magazine removed, a feature heavily emphasized in period advertising. Early and late production pistols show small variations in sights, markings, and safety components, which are of particular interest to collectors today. As a result, the Haenel Modell I Schmeisser is valued not only as a compact civilian pistol of the Weimar era, but also as an important example of early 20th-century German firearms engineering and the Schmeisser brothers’ broader influence on small-arms development.
