Markings: Standard / The top of the receiver is stamped with a “Crown over C” crest above “CARL GUSTAFS STADS / GEVARSFAKTORI / 1915”. The left side of the receiver is stamped “H.K. 333368”. The left side of the bolt is stamped with the last three digits of the serial number “368,” and the top of the bolt is stamped with a crown proof mark. The rear sight and base are stamped with a crown proof mark. Various components are stamped with crown proof marks and the last three digits of the serial number “368”.

The Swedish Mauser m/38 rifle (6.5 mm Gevär m/38) was developed from Sweden’s earlier Swedish Mauser m/1896 long rifle, the nation’s standard infantry rifle adopted in 1896 and widely respected for its exceptional workmanship and accuracy. By the late 1930s, Swedish ordnance engineers sought a shorter and more maneuverable service rifle and adopted the m/38 in 1938 as a cost-effective solution. Rather than designing an entirely new firearm, the initial m/38 rifles were created by reconfiguring existing m/1896 long rifles. The barrel was shortened and the front sight base repositioned, while the stock, front band spring, and barrel band were moved rearward to suit the new length; the original straight bolt handle was typically retained. Between 1938 and 1940, 55,080 m/1896 rifles were converted to m/38 configuration at Carl Gustafs Stads Gevärsfaktori in Eskilstuna. As World War II spread across Europe, Sweden sought to maintain its neutrality by ensuring adequate arms production, and the Carl Gustaf factory shifted its focus to other wartime weapons such as machine guns. As a result, in 1941, the contract for continued m/38 production was given to Husqvarna Vapenfabriks AB, which began manufacturing newly built rifles rather than converting additional m/1896 long rifles.

The earliest Husqvarna rifles were produced with straight bolt handles; the factory—already equipped to manufacture turned-down bolt bodies for its sporting rifles—soon received permission to adopt the bent bolt design, and most later production examples feature this configuration. By the end of production in 1944, Husqvarna had manufactured 65,588 new m/38 rifles. Modern collectors often refer to the earlier converted rifles as “m/96-38,” the Swedish military made no such distinction, and all rifles of this pattern were classified simply as the m/38 regardless of their origin or bolt configuration.
