The Golani is a civilian version with a new production milled semi-automatic receiver built in the United States. All other components are original IMI Galil production parts.

The Galil rifle, named in honor of Israel's elite Golani Brigade, is a direct product of rigorous battlefield testing and strategic design priorities. Following a comprehensive evaluation of competing rifles—including the M16, HK33, Stoner 63, and AK-47—the Golani Brigade favored the AK-47 for its legendary reliability and robust gas-piston system. However, Israel's growing alignment with U.S. military aid and NATO standards prompted interest in the 5.56mm cartridge. Israeli designer Israel Galil synthesized the best aspects of multiple rifles—including the AK-47, the Finnish Valmet M62 (an advanced AK derivative), the M16, and the FN-FAL—into a new hybrid design. This resulted in the Galil, a battle-proven rifle that entered service in 1972 and saw combat just a year later during the Yom Kippur War.

The Galil family included several configurations tailored for various military roles: the ARM (with bipod and carry handle), the AR (basic infantry rifle), the compact SAR, the Micro-Galil, and a sniper variant with a heavy barrel. Chambered in both 5.56mm and 7.62mm NATO, the Galil offered flexibility to Israeli forces and export customers. Century Arms' Golani Sporter is a civilian version of the Galil AR, retaining key military features like the milled steel receiver and folding tubular stock while omitting the ARM's bipod and handle. Mechanically, it surpasses the original AK design in several areas—most notably in its ambidextrous controls and a vertically mounted charging handle that is easier to manipulate under stress. The result is a rugged, battle-ready rifle adapted for modern shooters, yet still steeped in Israeli military heritage.
