Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Chinese Norinco, IAC 93/97, is a faithful reproduction of the legendary Winchester Model 1897 trench shotgun, one of the most iconic combat shotguns of the 20th century. Imported by International Armament Corporation (IAC), this pump-action 12-gauge shotgun was designed to replicate both the appearance and function of the original John Browning-designed Winchester 1897. Known for its exposed hammer, slam-fire capability, and rugged construction, the 93/97 was especially marketed toward collectors, reenactors, and enthusiasts who wanted the World War I and World War II trench gun experience without the high price tag of an original Winchester. Many models came fitted with a heat shield and bayonet lug assembly, just like the classic trench guns, allowing the mounting of the M1917 bayonet, further enhancing its authenticity for historical shooters and collectors. Mechanically, the Norinco/IAC 93/97 stays true to the original’s design, with a robust all-steel receiver and tubular magazine, typically holding 5 rounds of 12-gauge ammunition. While not as finely polished or smooth as the American-made Winchesters, these imports gained a reputation for being dependable shooters and an affordable way to own a piece of history. The exposed hammer and slam-fire feature—where the user can hold down the trigger and pump the action to fire consecutive shots—makes it particularly appealing to cowboy action shooters and enthusiasts of historical firearms. While some users noted that the fit, finish, and machining were more utilitarian compared to originals, the Norinco/IAC 93/97 remains highly respected as a functional, durable, and historically significant reproduction that successfully carries on the legacy of one of the most iconic pump-action shotguns in military history.
