Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Blackpowder Arms Company (CBAC) Third-Generation “Signature Series” Colt 1851 Navy is a late-20th-century, Colt-licensed cap-and-ball reissue produced in the 1990s into the early 2000s that deliberately reproduces the external form and markings of Samuel Colt’s original .36-caliber, six-shot 1851 Navy while remaining a modern commercial firearm rather than an antique Hartford manufacture; according to references such as the Blue Book of Gun Values and long-running Colt forum discussions, the Signature Series commonly used parts or castings sourced from Italy but were fully assembled, fitted, and hand-finished in the United States using Colt’s proprietary bluing and color-casehardening processes, bearing only Colt markings (no foreign import or proof marks), and are generally identifiable by a Sam Colt signature engraved on the backstrap — the deliberate hallmark of the Signature Series. These revolvers faithfully reproduce nearly every feature of the original 1851 Navy, including the barrel length, octagonal profiles, cylinder rollmarks, brass furniture, and several limited-edition commemorative models were produced in very small quantities.

They are popular with black-powder shooters, historical reenactors, and collectors seeking a Colt-licensed firearm with the appearance and handling of the original 19th-century revolver. Forum users emphasize that quality and fit can vary among individual examples and, despite their authenticity as Colt-licensed firearms, they remain modern reproductions rather than antique Colts; many collectors also note a distinction between the Second Generation (produced in the 1970s–1980s under more direct Colt oversight) and the Third Generation Signature Series.
