During the early 20th century, Colt made a significant mark in the pocket pistol market with a popular line of vest pocket pistols designed by John Browning. Among these was the Colt Model 1908 Vest Pocket Hammerless, which achieved remarkable success with over 400,000 units sold between 1908 and 1941. After World War II, Colt aimed to re-enter this market by briefly resuming production of the 1908 model from 1946 to 1947, utilizing approximately 1,200 pre-war parts. However, the influx of cheaper European imports quickly saturated the market, making Colt's plans for a new domestic pocket pistol financially unfeasible. In 1958, Colt turned to Astra in Spain to create the Colt Junior, which continued the legacy of compact handguns. Production of the Junior lasted until 1968, when the Gun Control Act prohibited the importation of "non-sporting" firearms. Each Junior is marked with a "CC" serial number prefix and bears "Junior" on the slide and "Made in Spain for Colt's" on the frame. The Junior .25's serial numbers range from approximately 1CC to 85082CC, and it was available in both .25 ACP and .22 Short calibers.

Notably, Colt also offered a Conversion Unit that allowed users to switch a .25 ACP Junior to .22 Short. After the restrictions of the Gun Control Act in 1968, Colt sought to maintain the Junior's presence in the market by contracting with Firearms International in Florida to produce a clone. This initiative led to the introduction of the Colt Automatic .25 in 1971, which remained available until production ended in 1973. The Automatic models feature a serial number prefix of "OD" with slides stamped "Automatic .25", and their serial numbers span from approximately OD1001 to OD120471.
