Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Colt's introduction of the Model 1889 marked a watershed moment in revolver design, pioneering the first double-action revolver with a swing-out cylinder. This innovative design was swiftly adopted by the US Navy as the Model of 1889 and later by the US Army in the Model of 1892, which featured slight improvements. The commercial variant of the Model 1889 also gained immediate popularity among civilians. Colt continued to refine the design with subsequent models such as the 1894, 1895, 1896, 1901, and 1903, each denoting significant updates and improvements.
Production of these revolvers ceased in 1907, with military and commercial models distinguished by their respective markings on the butt. Military versions bore US Army or US Navy stamps along with inspection marks, while assembly numbers were stamped on various parts during manufacturing. It's common to find these assembly numbers mistaken for serial numbers after original butt stamps were removed. To address this, Colt began stamping serial numbers in multiple locations on the revolver, including under the barrel, on the crane, and inside the side plate.
Military models were finished in blue with smooth walnut grips, featured a standard 6-inch barrel, and chambered in .38 Long Colt. Commercial models offered finishes in blue or bright nickel, barrel lengths of 3 inches, 4 1/2 inches, and 6 inches, and were available in calibers such as .38 Long Colt, .41 Long Colt, and later .32-20 and .38 Special. These revolvers featured complex actions prone to malfunction if mishandled or improperly maintained, with parts available and skilled gunsmiths scarce for repairs.
Notably, the New Army & Navy model distinguished itself by rotating its cylinder counterclockwise and placing the side plate on the right side of the frame, a departure from later Colt designs that adopted clockwise cylinder rotation and left-side frame side plates. The original Model 1889 design initially lacked external cylinder locking notches, relying on the cylinder advancing hand to secure it during firing, which proved problematic as it allowed the cylinder to rotate freely at rest. This flaw was rectified in subsequent models, particularly the upgraded Model 1892, which introduced external locking notches to prevent misfires caused by cylinder misalignment.
Commercial Model 1889 revolvers, however, were not retrofitted with this improvement, distinguishing them by the absence of external locking notches on the cylinder. These historical nuances underscore Colt's legacy of innovation in revolver design and the ongoing evolution of firearm safety and functionality in response to practical challenges and user feedback.
