The Colt Delta Elite is a full-size, Series 80-pattern 1911 pistol chambered in 10mm Auto, introduced by Colt in 1987 as the first major manufacturer's handgun to use that powerful cartridge. Externally similar to the classic Government Model, it featured reinforced internals and a dual recoil-spring system to handle the higher pressures of the 10mm round, and was offered in both royal-blue and stainless finishes with an eight-round magazine. While the 10mm gained early attention from outdoorsmen and defensive shooters—spurred in part by the earlier Bren Ten—the cartridge’s recoil and the rise of smaller, higher-capacity .40 S&W pistols led Colt to discontinue the Delta Elite in 1996. Renewed interest in the 10mm prompted Colt to reintroduce the model in 2009, followed by updated “Generation 2.5” versions around 2016 featuring Novak sights, an undercut trigger guard, and other refinements. Today, the Delta Elite remains popular among shooters who appreciate the 1911 platform paired with the 10mm’s flat-shooting power for defense and field use.
