Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt MKIV/Series 70 Government Model is one of the most respected commercial versions of the classic 1911 platform produced by Colt's Manufacturing Company and represents an important chapter in the evolution of the legendary 1911 design originally created by John Moses Browning. Introduced in 1970, the Series 70 Government Model was developed as an updated commercial version of the long-standing Colt M1911A1 pattern and became known for incorporating several improvements intended to enhance accuracy and reliability. One of the most notable features introduced with the Series 70 was Colt’s Accurizor collet barrel bushing, a specialized four-finger spring steel bushing designed to provide a tighter lock-up between the barrel and slide, thereby improving mechanical accuracy without requiring hand-fitting. Like traditional Government Model pistols, the Series 70 is chambered in .45 ACP and built with a full-size steel frame and slide paired with a five-inch barrel, giving the pistol excellent balance and a long sight radius that contributes to its reputation for precision shooting.

The pistol operates using the classic short-recoil, locked-breech system that has defined the 1911 design for more than a century and features a single-action trigger widely admired for its crisp break and short reset. Standard examples typically include a manual thumb safety, grip safety, fixed combat sights, and checkered grip panels, all contributing to the traditional appearance and handling that many shooters associate with the classic Colt Government Model. Unlike later Series 80 pistols, the Series 70 design does not include a firing-pin safety, a feature that many enthusiasts believe contributes to a slightly cleaner trigger pull and maintains closer adherence to the original 1911 design philosophy. Because of its historical significance, excellent craftsmanship, and connection to the golden era of Colt commercial pistols, the Colt MKIV/Series 70 Government Model has become highly sought after by collectors and shooters alike, and it remains widely regarded as one of the finest factory-produced interpretations of the classic 1911 pistol.
