The Colt MKIV/Series 80 Government Model is a classic full-size 1911-pattern handgun produced by Colt's Manufacturing Company and represents a later evolution of the legendary 1911 design originally created by John Moses Browning. Introduced in the early 1980s, the Series 80 Government Model was developed as an update to the earlier Colt MKIV/Series 70 Government Model and incorporated an additional internal safety system intended to enhance drop safety. The most significant mechanical change was the addition of a firing-pin block safety, which prevents the firing pin from moving forward unless the trigger is deliberately pulled, adding an extra layer of protection against accidental discharge if the pistol is dropped. Like traditional Government Model pistols, the Series 80 version is typically chambered in .45 ACP and built with a full-size steel frame and slide paired with a five-inch barrel, providing excellent balance, durability, and a long sight radius that contributes to its reputation for accuracy. The pistol operates using the classic short-recoil, locked-breech system that has defined the 1911 platform for more than a century and features the single-action trigger that enthusiasts value for its crisp break and precise control.
