Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
In 1898, Colt's Manufacturing Company introduced its first large-frame, swing-out cylinder revolver — the Colt New Service — marking a significant evolution in the company’s revolver designs. Built on a robust frame and engineered for strength, the New Service would remain Colt’s primary large-frame double-action revolver until World War II. The New Service was an immediate success with both military and civilian buyers seeking a large, powerful revolver that incorporated the then-modern swing-out cylinder system for faster and more convenient reloading. Its solid lockup, durability, and substantial size gave it a reputation for strength and reliability — qualities that made it especially attractive to law enforcement agencies and armed forces around the world. Production numbers were substantial, reflecting its widespread popularity and long service life. Over the years, the New Service was chambered in an impressive variety of calibers, including .38 Special, .357 Magnum, .38-40, .44-40, .44 Russian, .44 Special, .45 ACP, .45 Long Colt, .450 Eley, .455 Eley, and .476 Eley, making it one of the most versatile large-frame revolvers of its era. The revolver was offered in numerous configurations, including official-issue U.S. military models, foreign military models, and police contract variations.

Manufactured from 1898 through 1942, the New Service spanned a period of dramatic change in both firearms technology and global conflict. From 1898 through the late 1920s, it featured hard black rubber grips with molded-in checkering and prominent Colt logos. Thereafter, it was typically fitted with checkered walnut grips adorned with silver Colt medallions, giving later examples a more traditional and refined appearance. Barrel lengths included 4", 4 1/2", 5", 5 1/2", 6", and 7 1/2", allowing the revolver to serve in roles ranging from service carry to sporting and target use. Finish options included a rich, polished blue, bright nickel, and a dull brushed blue commonly seen on military models, each complementing the revolver’s substantial and authoritative profile.
