Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Single Action Army (SAA), also known as the Model P, Peacemaker, or M1873, is a classic single-action revolver that was originally designed for the U.S. government’s service revolver trials of 1872 by Colt's Patent Firearms Manufacturing Company. It was adopted as the standard-issue sidearm for the U.S. Army from 1873 until 1892. This iconic revolver became famous for its durability, simplicity, and powerful performance. Over its history, the Colt SAA has been produced in over 30 different calibers and offered with a range of barrel lengths, though its overall design has remained largely unchanged since its introduction. Initially embraced for military and frontier use, the Colt SAA earned the nickname "Peacemaker" for its role in taming the American Wild West, becoming an enduring symbol of that era. Its popularity was widespread, with ranchers, lawmen, and outlaws alike choosing it for its reliability. While Colt has ceased production of the revolver twice, the demand from collectors and shooting enthusiasts led to its revival on both occasions.

In 1994, production of the Colt Single Action Army resumed, spurred by the rise in popularity of Cowboy Action Shooting matches. These later models, known as the "Late Third Generation" or sometimes "Fourth Generation," retained many of the original features, including the removable and replaceable cylinder bushing. The serial numbers for this series started at S02001A and continue to follow the same numbering convention with the "S" prefix and "A" suffix. Colt still manufactures the SAA in two finishes—either an all-nickel or a blued model with a color case-hardened frame—and in three traditional barrel lengths: 4+3/4, 5+1/2, and 7+1/2 inches. These revolvers are available in eight different chamberings, including .32-20, .38-40, .44-40, .38 Special, .357 Magnum, .44 Special, .45 Colt, and .45 ACP. In total, there are 42 variations available. Colt has also continued to offer specialized models, such as the Third Generation Buntlines and New Frontiers, through its Custom Shop, as well as engraved versions. In 2010, the company introduced a "revival" of the Frontier Six Shooter with a nickel finish, further cementing the SAA’s place in American firearm history. Today, the Colt Single Action Army remains highly sought after, not only by collectors and enthusiasts but also as a symbol of the rugged American spirit of the Old West.
